Valle Castellana Marrone Chestnut

History
Chestnut tree growing and chestnut gathering were widespread practices already in the 13th century.

Current Production Area in the Park: Municipality of Valle Castellana

Description
Traditional agricultural product of Regione Abruzzo. The fruit has an oval-elliptical shape with a particularly tasty pulp. The pericarp has a bright brown color with slight reddish streaks. Usually, harvesting is carried out through the beating of the husks and the creation of heaps of chestnuts in the husk for the subsequent opening. However, at higher altitudes, the fruits are left on the tree until they fall naturally.

Product Availability: Harvesting in late autumn. After soaking in water and subsequent drying, the product becomes stable and can be sold during the months following the harvest.
